We’ve all heard it – giveaways are an amazing way to grow as a blogger. And while that may be true, it also isn’t. Because not all giveaways are a good way to grow. In fact, some can potentially temporarily or permanently hinder your following.
I myself have been a participant and leader of giveaways since I started my blogging journey. My first giveaway was with a few gals (who are now Style Collective). It was an amazing experience, because I did grow, but also becasue I made blogger friends.
But I kept doing different types of giveaways with different groups and I started to notice that not all giveaways are good. In fact, I will never do certain giveaways again!
So today I’m sharing the best & worst giveaways for bloggers. Pay attention so that you don’t fall prey to scammy giveaways!
The Good Types of Giveaways
There are several giveaways which are great for bloggers because they’re safe and will most likely have a great return on investment (ROI).
When you partner to do giveaways with brands, you are establishing yourself as a professional. Partnering with a brand is a great way to build authenticity, Let’s face it, it’s pretty cool! These types of giveaways are simple to do if it involves products/services as a prize. Just make sure that when you do partner with a brand for a giveaway, you:
- Actually like the brand
- Have a contract to make sure every party delivers on promises
My favorite types of giveaways are the ones where I buy product just to give away for my followers. It gets me so excited! It’s like Christmas! Your followers will love this, recognize the hard work you do, and engage with your account more,
The key to these giveaways is providing your followers something worth it. Make sure the value of the prize is excitable. You may have to source items yourself, which can be costly, or you can just giveaway PR items you haven’t used and don’t plan on using. Just make sure it’s a prize high in value.
Small Blogger Giveaway
This is a giveaway with only 3-5 blogger involved, max. The reason these giveaways work so well is because you can team up to provide a lot of value and gain each other’s audience. The only thing I would make sure of when doing these giveaways is that everyone participating is serious about networking and is not playing the “grow followers” game.
You only want to do these types of giveaways with bloggers you trust.
The Bad Types of Giveaways
There is one giveaway which won’t be beneficial. And believe me, this comes from experience. One of these types of giveaways ruined my Instagram engagement and I have yet to recover from it.
Loop giveaways might help you grow fast, but brands and audiences are pretty savvy about this. The follower drop off from these giveaways is over 80%. You lose more than you gain, and especially when it comes to entry payment.
In a desperate search to grow my stagnant account, I participated in a mega star filled loop giveaway (talking celebrities here), and the payment for entry was $600.
It wasn’t worth it. I only gained spam followers (which I’m still trying to get rid of), and my 4.7% engagement dropped down to a 1.7%.
The sad part is, people are still selling these giveaways. It’s been a very long time since I did one and I won’t do one again. Take it from me, don’t do this!
