Instagram is every bloggers and business owners frenemy. We love it because it’s so inspirational. You get to see amazing photographs, keepy up with your favorite people, and connect with others. Yet, we grow sick and tired of it. At times it can feel like we HATE it.
Let’s face it, in order to get noticed it really is all about having a pretty feed and numbers to back it up. Many bloggers and business owners find themselves frustrated at the small amount of growth they are getting compared to everyone else. The important thing to remember is that people BUY follower and likes around 75% of the time. So if you’ve seen someone’s numbers jump from 10,000 followers to 20,000 in a matter of days, they are most likely buying their followers – unless they’re celebrities (and they still may be buying followers!)
If you’ve ever felt like growing your Instagram account quickly was just not possible, stop that type of thinking right now!
It IS POSSIBLE to grow your account organically BUT it does take your time and dedication. Naysayers just haven’t really put in the work – even though it may seem like they have. I grow people’s accounts for a living and you can bet it isn’t just something I spend 5 minutes on every day. My recent client is wanting to grow her account from 4k to 10k in under 3 months. I plan on spending AT LEAST an hour each day growing her account – minimum. If you want the results you need to put in the work. Nothing comes easy – including followers.
Do you want the same success? Follow these 5 steps
1) Develop A Cohesive Feed
You might say “But Mariam, so many celebrities just post random photos and they get a lot of followers!”. Yes, they do. But they are celebrities. It’s a whole different ball game then growing followers as a blogger or new business.
If you want to grow your account quickly, the first thing you need to do is make sure your feed is branded well and cohesive. My suggestion is to stick to a theme and follow through each day. Make sure all your photos flow together nicely and are pleasant to look at – no matter what the subjects are. Speaking of subjects, make sure what you post makes sense for your niche and don’t be afraid to include a little personality. The ultimate goal is to be interesting enough to generate buzz. You can start the process by adding a bit of yourself in everything you post.
2) Follow Other People
You cannot expect to grow if you aren’t following people. A lot of people think that following a bunch of people makes you look desperate but I have to disagree. From my own professional experience, following people allows them the chance to notice you when they otherwise might have not. It opens the doors to new relationships and potential customers.
However, that doesn’t mean you should follow a lot of people and then unfollow them the very next day. Give them a chance to follow you back and get to know you. As a rule of thumb, I only unfollow people after a month and they still haven’t followed me back or have never engaged with my account. You want engaged followers!
3) Post Consistently
If you aren’t posting consistently, your followers will forget you. Not posting consistently also means less eyes on your account. You want to make sure you are at least posting 3 times a week. Contrary to popular belief, you won’t lose followers if you don’t post. They actually unfollow when they notice you again. It’s also a good idea not to overwhelm your followers. A lot of people believe that with the new algorithm, their followers won’t see all their photos. This is not necessarily true – as people I regularly engage with show up on my feed a lot – especially if they post over 2 times a day, which borders excessive. People lost interest quickly. Unless your content is very high quality, it’s best not to overwhelm your followers.
4) Engage Like Crazy
To gain followers quickly, you need to engage, engage, engage. This means following others, liking photos, and giving comments away like crazy. You need to show potential followers that you are a human being and not a robot that just posts and leaves. They want to see your personality through your comments, the things you are interested through your likes, and your respect for people that leave comments on your own posts. So many bloggers and business owners neglect to engage with their audiences and that’s EXACTLY what makes Instagram a cold and harsh place at times.
5) Use Hashtags Strategically
We all have the opportunity to use 30 hashtags in our Instagram posts. It would be wise to do so! Hashtags are what gets your account noticed by potential followers. Why? Because they are using the same hashtags and they are looking through the hashtags.
While it’s very important to use all 30 hashtags, your focus should be using strategic hashtags that will grow your accounts. Pick a variety of hashtags that describe your niche, your photos, and a handful of popular tags that get a lot of views. If you want to find out what hashtags you need, check out my hashtag research service here.
Growing your account quickly isn’t impossible, but it does take time and dedication. If I can grow an account to 10k in under 3 months, so can you. Just persevere and be mindful of what strategies you use going forward.
